Abstract
On August 8, 2024, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its first ever emergency advisory about a possible megaquake around the Nankai Trough, following a magnitude 7.1 quake that struck earlier in the day off the coast of Kyushu. It is believed that the probability of a major earthquake occurring in the Nankai Trough is relatively higher than usual, according to the agency. The government called for a special attention to urge people to reaffirm disaster preparedness.
The NHK Broadcasting Culture Research Institute conducted an online survey to review the advisory issued in August 2024, and hosted a symposium, inviting media representatives involved in disaster news, to examine how the media should prepare for the risk of Nankai Trough earthquakes.
