A study has been made of the methods to reduce the self-absorption of spectrum lines in laser spectrochemical analysis. The degree of the self-absorption is estimated with selfabsorption curves of iron lines ending on a5D levels. According to the result, the selfabsorption can be reduced by decreasing the laser energy and the resistance of the spark parameter and by increasing the spark voltage and the capacitance. Influences of these factors on the lines and back-ground intensities have also been studied to decide a desirable analytical condition. Using the condition, linear working curves with big slopes are obtained for chromium in steels over a wide range of concentrations. When the spark voltage and the capacitance are decreased to avoid a stain produced on a sample surface, it is effective for the reduction of the self-absorption to blow argon between the electrodes from the slit side at a flow rate of 10 l/min.
