An electrodeless discharge lamp (E. D. L.) of phosphorus monoxide was developed. The E. D. L. containing a trace of oxygen and 6 Torr of phosphorus vapor was ignited by a high frequency of 27 MHz and 55 watt. Emission spectra of P and PO were measured in 200-360 nm wavelength range. Two bands of the PO molecule were found, one is the β system extending from 320 to 360 nm, and the other is γ system extending from 230 to 280 nm. The emission spectra of PO was observed also in air-acetylene flame. The determination of phosphorus by atomic and molecular absorption spectrometry was done in the wavelength range of 200-360 nm using nitrous oxide-acetylene and air-acetylene flames. Detection limit by the molecular absorption of PO in air-acetylene flame was 82 μg/ml at 246 nm, and in case of phosphorus resonance line at 213.6 nm, in nitrous oxide-acetylene flame it was 64 μg/mi. The detection limit by the emission spectrum of air-acetylene flame was 40 μg/ml at 246.3 nm in PO molecular band.
