Judging from the constituents of essential oils, E. ciliata HYLANDER and its relatives are classified as follows : 1. E. ciliata (THUNB.) HYLANDER Characteristic constituent : elsholtzia ketone. 2. E. Oldhami HEMSL. Characteristic constituents : elsholtzia ketone and naginata ketone. 3. E> Oldhami HEMSL. var. Argyi (LEV.) MIGO (non Hara) Characteristic constituents : elsholtzia ketone, naginata ketone and d-linalool. 4. E. nipponica OHWI Characteristic constituents : geraniol and p-cymene. Recently, naginata ketone obtained from E. Oldhami was proved to be β-dehydro-elsholtzia ketone C_<10>H_<12>O_2F_3 ; so that elsholtzia ketone may be formed from naginata ketone. Therefore, E. Oldhami and E. ciliata are supposed to be differenciated from E. Oldhami var. Argyi respectively. On the other hand, E. Oldhami var. Argyi and E. nipponica are probably vicarious species in each other.
