Chromosome numbers are reported for eight species and one variety of Japanese Dioscorea. The counts were 2n=20 in D. tokoro, D. septemloba, D. quinqueloba and D. izuensis, although D. asclepiadea, D. nipponica and D. septemloba var. sititoana had 2n=40. In D. tenuipes, three chromosome numbers, (2n=20, 30, 40) and in D. gracillima, two numbers, (2n=20, 40) were found.
