Abstract

Phenols contain small amounts of water which is very difficult to remove. It is known that phenols dissolved in acetone containing a small amounts of a metallic salt such as cadmium nitrate give well resolved signals for the OH group and H2O protons. When the signal of the H2O proton in phenol becomes a sharp peak, it is feasible to analyze it from the peak height. This technique was applied to the determination of a small amounts of water in phenols. A calibration curve was obtained by measuring the peak height ratio of tetramethyltin (TMT) to the H2O proton signals. This calibration curve was linear and the relative standard deviation was within 0.45%. This method is considered to be useful as an easy and rapid method of analysis of amounts of water in phenols.
