Photonic Crystals and Defect Engineering

Abstract

Recently, there have been increasing interests in a photonic crystal which has a great potential to manipulate photons arbitrarily. In this article, so-called "defect engineering" which enables us to manipulate photons is described, where unique phenomenon of trapping and emission of photons by a single defect in photonic crystal is demonstrated as an example.
