The structure of carbon materials and their precursors can be studied using magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR (MAS-SS-NMR). The state and structure of adsorbed and/or intercalated molecules and ions on/in the carbon materials can also be determined this way. Eddy currents induced while measuring the properties of materials using this technique can cause a temperature elevation in conducting carbon materials. In this study, the influence of various physical and chemical characteristics of carbon materials on the temperature elevation caused by MAS-SS-NMR was investigated. Oxygen content was found to be the predominant factor in governing the level of temperature elevation: The higher the oxygen content, the smaller the temperature elevation. The observed correlation between oxygen content and temperature elevation enables rough estimations of temperature elevations in carbon materials prior to the MAS-SS-NMR measurements.
