Language is part of the essential native culture of a country. If you do not have enough language skills such as speaking, hearing, reading and writing, it is clear that life in a foreign country will become very troublesome and difficult. This difficulty has always existed, and will continue to exist for the Japanese. To overcome and conquer this difficulty of language situation there is no other way but to practice learning a foreign language and to try to develope skills of using it. Probably the number of Japanese students or research workers studying in America is far greater than those studying in foreign countries today. America is a country where English is publicly spoken in every state and also is used in formal documents and statements. That means that you must get used to English if you want to go America and study in American colleges and universities. Yet learning English is one of the most important factors for the Japanese to master however different the languages, English and Japanese, might be. In the following report, I will introduce one of the unique trials for the Japanese studying at C.L.U. (California Lutheran University). It is called A.P.P. (Academic Preparation Program) which is a special program for Japanese students to challenge and master English, and also to prepare for the academic careers at C.L.U.
