It was explored as to whether mastery goal orientation can be divided on the basis of Martin's idea on success-approach and failure-avoidance, and what kind of characteristics each of the scales has in English education. One hundred and twelve 10th graders responded to a questionnaire on the two scales and confidence, and learning anxiety scales. Mastery Goal Success-Approach (MGSA) scale (α=.78) and Mastery Goal Failure-Avoidance (MGFA) scale (α=.76) were constructed. It was explored as to how the two MGO scales are related to confidence scales, and learning anxiety scales using partial correlation analysis, canonical correlation method and cluster analysis. It is disclosed that MGSA is positively correlated with self-efficacy and that MGFA is correlated with long-term prospective anxiety, which is shown to be related to defensive pessimism.
