Abstract
Systematic soil surveys were carried out at 69 sites in Shikoku forest land to evaluate organic carbon stocks in 3 pools, dead wood, litter, and mineral soil (in the upper 30cm depth). The amount of the average carbon stocks in 3 pools were 0.25, 0.57, 6.56kg m-2 respectively, and the total stock of 3 pools was almost equal to the aboveground carbon stock of average 40-years coniferous plantation stand. The weak tendency could be detected that the higher on altitude, the larger carbon stock. And the amount of the soil carbon stock under coniferous plantations was larger than that under the hardwood forests. However it might not necessarily depend on the effect of vegetation but on the site conditions.
