Abstract
The Kiso River upstream embankments were built from 1601 to 1609, but afterward they were broken by repeated flooding and many spur dikes were placed at specific times and locations. This study noted the construction of spur dikes based on the historical facts contained in the historical document and investigated the relationship between the frequency of flooding and dike breaks and the construction of spur dikes. As a result, it became clear that many floods and dike breaks occurred in specific time periods and that locations where spur dikes were constructed were related to dike breaks.
