Abstract

The introduction of renewable energy is indispensable for the realization of decarbonized society. However, output curtailment of renewable energy is being carried out in remote islands. In this study, we evaluated CO2 emissions when the vehicle-to-grid system that stores and uses surplus renewable energy in electric vehicles will be introduce to Tanegashima Island in 2040. The results showed that when only buses were replaced by EVs, annual thermal power generation decreased by approximately 1,600 MWh and CO2 emissions were reduced by 2%. On the other hand, when more than 40% of vehicles were replaced by EVs, the CO2 reduction rate decreased, indicating that the reduction was not sufficient. In addition, when the amount of renewable energy introduced was increased, higher CO2 reductions were achieved, but the amount of output curtailment increased.
