Abstract

The antibacterial activity and clinical efficacy of biapenem (BIPM), a new carbapenem antibiotic, were investigated.
MICs of this drug against 222 clinical isolates of 8 species were measured at an inoculum size of 106 cells/ml. MIC90 values against Staphylococcus aureus [MSSA], S. aureus.[MRSA], Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Morganella morganii, Serratia marcescens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were respectively determined to be 12.5, 50, ≤0.1, 0.2, 1.56, 1.56, 1.56, and 1.56μg/ml. These values were almost equal to those of imipenem and superior to those of ceftazidime.
The clinical efficacy was studied in 10 patients with infections (1 with sepsis, 9 with respiratory tract infection) by administering the drug at 300mg×2/day. The clinical response was excellent in 1 and good in 8 cases.
As for side effect, eruption and interstitial pneumonitis with the elevations in WBC, GOT and GPT, were observed in 2 cases.
