Abstract
Monitoring cows behavior in the forest and acquiring their position information, we attached cows GPS receiver and analyzed their GPS logs. Positional records with ten seconds interval were obtained by two of four Japanese Black cows with GPS receiver from August 27 to September 1,2001. At the same time, cow behaviors in the forest, classified by walking, standing, grazing, lying and ruminating, were recorded with one-minute interval. Kinds of vegetation that cows intake were also recorded. Cows moved in the study site unevenly during the research period. They were staying for long time around the resting point and around the water point. On the contrary, cows did not utilize the area in the steeper place. Classified cow behaviors in daytime were by walking (10%), grazing (40%) and others (50%). Cows had Japanese pampas grasses Miscanthus sinensis) the most frequently, and followed bracken ferns Pteridium aquilinum) and kudzu vines Pueraria lobata).
