The carboxyl groups of collagen were inactivated by esterification using various alcohols with acid catalysis. The extent of esterification was measured from chrome-binding capacity with chromeum perchloride and trioxalate chromiate. It was found that methanol with acid catalysis was completely specific in esterification and that under these conditions, the extent of esterification decreased as the size of the alecole molecule increased.
