Instead of direct determinations of Red Cell Na and K, indirect determinations of Red Cell Na and K were carried out and their levels were compared with many clinical signs and functional tests of the patients. As expected, an increase of Red Cell Na was observed mainly in such diseases as congestive heart failure and various renal diseases. An increase of venous pressure and a decrease of Na-Clearance, GFR and RPF were also demonstrated in the above-mentioned disease-groups and the severity of these changes paralleled well with an increase of Red Cell Na. Red Cell K, on the contrary, remained relatively constant when compared with Red Cell Na. It seemed that the change of Red Cell K may be related to the protein metabolism of the body.
