Abstract
This study examined development of construction of drawing in young children and relationship of spatial cognition and switching of reaction. Twenty two 5-year-olds and 21 6-year-olds were participated in the next three tasks: drawing task, spatial cognitive task, and switching task. The main findings as followed: (1) 6-year-olds could consider the size and position to draw the object because they produced more noncanonical drawings than 5-year-olds. (2) For both spatial cognitive task and switching task, the scores of 6-year-olds were significantly higher than 5-year-olds. (3) The score of switching task in children who produced noncanonical drawing was significantly higher than that of those who produced canonical drawing. This means that spatial cognition is a necessary condition in the development of construction of drawing. These results suggested that both spatial cognition and switching were related to the development of construction of drawing.
