Abstract
We examined whether universal design fonts affect word comprehension and memorability and impressions. Twenty-four undergraduate students participated in the experiment. Four types of fonts were used: Yu Mincho, Yu Gothic, HG Marugothic M-PRO, and UD Digital Textbook Style N-R. First, the participants made semantic judgments about whether the words were "edible" and "touchable". Next, the participants were given a recognition test for the words presented in the semantic judgment task. Finally, the participants evaluated their impressions of the four fonts. In the semantic judgment task, there tended to be differences in reaction time depending on the font, but in the re-recognition task, there were no differences in correct responses or reaction time. As a result of factor analysis on the impression ratings, individuality factor and likability factor were extracted. Analysis of variance for the factor scores showed that the UD digital textbook font was more likable than the other fonts. The results showed that the universal design font gave a good impression but did not affect comprehension or memory.
