Abstract
Since the late 2000s, the policy for international students has transformed from international contribution to a strategy for acquiring foreign talent. In this context, the employment and retention of international students in Japan have become major policy issues, and research responding to such social concerns has accumulated. This study reviews previous studies on the workplace experiences and factors promoting or hindering the retention of former international students working in Japan. It aims to organize and share the findings obtained so far and to consider future challenges. The study examines 36 previous studies published domestically between 2012 and 2023, outlining the research subjects, methods, research questions, and scope of verification. It then organizes the findings from previous research on the current state of retention of former international students, factors promoting or hindering retention, and challenges for regional retention. Finally, it identifies research topics that need further exploration.
