In the construction of emergency flood control enclosure walls of prestressed concrete around LNG surface storage thanks, in order to satisfy the functional requirements and improve safety considerations, planning and construction of the concrete structure involved special measures to prevent cracking arising from cement hydration. This involved preselection of cement quality and aggregate grade together with mixing control, pipe cooling and precooling methods coordinated with the construction stages involved. This paper places particular emphasis on the construction results arising from the adoption of precooling which employs the use of liquid nitrogen, a method which is quite acceptable for small scale construction work so well.
