Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to develop the Japanese version of the Drive for Muscularity Scale. Five hundred twenty university students completed questionnaires on drive for muscularity, frequency of exercise, body image, and eating attitude. Results showed that the scale, which consisted of two subscales—Behaviors and Attitudes, had sufficient internal consistency. Results of the validity are as follows: 1) males had more drives than females, 2) frequency of exercise was correlated to the drive, 3) body image, self-esteem, tendency to narcissism, and gender role was correlated to the drive, and 4) only "Behaviors" on the scale was correlated to the drive for thinness. These results suggested that the scale had various validities. What remains to be done may include cross-cultural studies.
