Abstract

The present study focused on motivation for acquiring assertion (assertion acquisition motivation) in junior high school students. A questionnaire that described situations to measure assertion acquisition motivation was developed and administered to junior high school students, and the acceptable reliability and validity of the scale were demonstrated. Correlations between assertion acquisition motivation and behavioral tendencies were examined by using the scale. The results indicated that students with a tendency to make aggressive behavior had higher external motivation for acquiring assertion than students with a tendency toward pro-social behavior and students with a tendency to refrain from self-expression. In contrast, students with a tendency toward pro-social behavior had higher identified motivation and intrinsic motivation than students with a tendency to make aggressive behavior and students with a tendency to refrain from self-expression. The results have demonstrated that there are individual differences in degree and quality of assertion acquisition motivation.
