Abstract
One of the requirements for creating a safe and cozy city center is to change the existing sidewalks to barrier-free type. The longitudinal profiles of sidewalks in the center of Sapporo city were measured using handy profilers. Highly accurate profiles and barrier-free conditions of sidewalks in the central part of Sapporo city could thus be measured.Systematic planning of Sapporo city center is reviewed from the viewpoint of the conditions of barrier-free sidewalks. This paper proposes an effective method for setting the priority for making sidewalks barrier-free aiming at phased networking. It also describes the concept of sidewalk maintenance linked with community planning.
