The Tertiary Malubog Formation studied is composed of gently dipping strata of argillaceous sedimentary rocks widely distributed in central Cebu Philippines. Clay mineral analyses indicate smectite kaolinite illite chlorite and mixed-layer types constitute essentially the argillaceous beds. These clays occur in several mineral assemblages that are allmost all smectite-dominated. Most combinations include four or three clay species. Accessory minerals are finely crystalline quartz feldspars calcite cristobalite and jarosite.
