In order to improve the efficiency of arc furnace operation, computer system having functions for operational supervision and operation data analysis has been introduced into Shibukawa Plant, Daido Steel, in April 1983.
In arc furnace operation, carbon injection has a big influence on electric power consumption, refractory consumption and yield of scrap and alloy elements. So, it had to be optimized first by the introduction of computer system.
The results obtained are as follows.
(1) Reduction rate of (FeO) depends on O2/C (Ratio of Nm3 O2 and kg C injected per minute). (FeO) increases under the condition of O2/C>0.8 and decreases at O2/C<0.8.
(2) It was made clear that change of exhaust gas temperature was proportional to the mass of CO gas evolved in reducing reaction of (FeO). In addition, final point of (FeO) reduction could be easily estimated by detecting rapid drop of exhaust gas temperature.
The presented optimization of C injection by computer system has led to advances such as saving of refractory and electrode consumption and improvement of melting yield.
