The fetal erythropoiesis of mouse and the effects of x-ray irradiation on fetal erythropoiesis were investigated by tritiated thymidine autoradiography.
1) On the 11th day of gestation, labeling index of erythroblasts in the peripheral blood, consist of mainly pronormoblasts, was about 50 %. On the 12th day of gestation, most of the pronormoblasts were differenciated to the normoblast and labeling index reduced only 0.7%. On the 13th day of gestation, unlabeled uncleated erythrocytes and also denucleation began to appear in the peripheral blood.
2) The liver on the 12th day of gestation developed well as the hematopoietic organ. Many newly formed pronormoblasts and normoblasts were seen in the hepatic parenchyma.
3) The labeling indices of erythroblasts in the peripheral blood after x-ray irradiation with 200 R on the 11th day of gestation, were not different from the control at various stages of the fetal growth.
4) Labeled cells of the fetal blood were decreased slightly after x-ray irradiation on the 11th day of gestation. But on the 12th day of gestation, labeled cells were increased rapidly in the peripheral blood following 100 R or 200 R x-ray irradiation. This increase was confirmed histologically due to the emission of pronormoblasts and normoblasts out of the liv
