Abstract

A 30 years old female refered us because of ulcer and pain of the tongue on 15th, July in 1961. The lesion was localized at the right borber of the tongue and diagnosed as squamouse cell carcinoma by biopsy. The tumour was relatively small in size and treated by the implantation of radon seeds of 14 m Ci with estimated dose 8, 000 R. The reccurences were observed repeatedly after this treatment. And these were treated by radiation therapy (90-Sr and superficial irradiation by x-rays). The total dose delivered was about 40, 000 R during 13 months of over all time.
But the succesful treatment results were not obtained.
Finally, the tumour is operated by hemi-glossectomy. Histological findings show that the operation was complete.
Presently, after 6 years from operation, she keeps normal conditions.
From the end result of this case, the radiation therapy was of the limited value except the radon seed implantation applied at the first chance. This case show the importance of the combination of surgery and radiation therapy and the difficulity of choice of the adequate period when the second method is applied.
