Motivational Theory Perspective for Gamification

Abstract

This paper has three aims. First, the importance of intrinsic motivation is illustrated using the Self- determination theory framework. Second, the theoretical relationships between video games and intrinsic motivation are explained. Specifically, intrinsic motivation can be enhanced by satisfaction of the basic psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness, through the provision of structured environment, the provision of meaningful choices and personalization opportunities, and the provision of opportunities for cooperation to experience connectedness. Thirdly, the future challenge for gamification is discussed. That is how to use the theoretical framework of motivation.
