In this paper, two functions of films-transmission and record of information-are discussed. The former is shown by public use films for drama or education, the latter by particular use films for research or compilation. Further this report describes the discussion about the application of the library science method for public use films, and the documentation method for particular use films. In addition to the above, it refers to the characteristics of image information, the decrease and the distortion of language information in the change to image information, and the pattern matching method for improvement of these. As an example, the film library of NHK-TV is introduced, and the mechanization of film information retrieval is discussed.
