Abstract
REGISTER is a computerized information retrieval system on current research projects carried on by national, municipal and non-profitable institutions and research institutes attached to universities in the field of science and technology in Japan. The retrieval service was started in 1972 by JAPAN SCIENCE FOUNDATION as the first clearing service (referral information service) in Japan. At present 12,771 research projects conducted for the 1973 fiscal year are available for service and the data file for about 20,900 projects for the 1974 are now being prepared. CST is a poly-aspects and post-coordinate decimal classification scheme with four digits, and covers all fields of science, technology and their related problems. The scheme was originally developed for the use in REGISTER. After having given the necessary revisions based on the results of actual execution of the service, the 1974 edition of CST was compleated. It consists of the main table of 2,242 entries with about 8,500 terms, synonyms, etc. and the relative index in Japanese syllabary order. This paper reports the current situation of REGISTER and CST with their applications, and deals with their demerits and their amendments.
