Abstract
Comparison between name and fragment code at generic search of chemical compounds has been done with phenylethanol as an example, using CA Search on-line and GREMAS code of IDC batch system. GREMAS code is better than name both in recall and relevance factor. Relevance factor of the former is especially good, this seems to be due to the existence of another code named zone-term which correlates fragments syntactically each other. By nomenclature, it is almost impossible to anticipate all the possible names in either case of a compound being a heading parent or a substituent. So, it is difficult to increase the effectiveness of generic search. The extension of the comparison is discussed.
