Abstract
Mitsubishi Research Institute has provided an online information service since 1983 which is the first fee-based service based on the JAPAN MARC database. This paper describes the result of the survey conducted in 1984 which analysed and evaluated performance of the service as well as MARC data themselves. Judging from the result information services based on the database was favoured and the future of such services will be promissing. However, several problems were referred to as well such as the lack of specificity, coverage, time lag, parsing rules for Japanese texts, etc.
