Abstract
Surgical orthodontic treatment is usually applied in patients with severe class Ⅲ skeletal malocclusion. However, either surgical orthodontic treatment or orthodontic camouflage treatment is applicable in cases of borderline class Ⅲ skeletal malocclusion. At present, there are no clear criteria for treatment selection. This study was performed to clarify the criteria for treatment selection by comparing cephalometric analysis items at the first visit between a surgical orthodontic treatment group and an orthodontic camouflage treatment group in borderline cases. The study population consisted of 28 patients with classⅢ skeletal malocclusion(mean age 24.0 ± 7.3 years) who visited the Department of Orthodontics Dental Clinic, Health Sciences University of Hokkaido. ANB angle were -4.1°to 1.0°in the orthodontic camouflage treatment group, and -5.2°to 0.9°in the surgical orthodontic treatment group. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the two groups. ANB angle, Wits appraisal, IMPA and overjet values were significantly lower in the surgical orthodontic treatment group. These results imply that ANB angle, Wits appraisal, IMPA, and overjet may be important factors in determining the indication for surgical orthodontic treatment.
