Since its modernization, the Tokyo metropolitan area has been expanding its urban area based on railroads. This research aims to clarify the transition process of the Tokyo metropolitan area over the past 50 years, focusing on land use and traffic behavior along railroad lines. The analysis of population and land use shows that the Tokyo metropolitan area has transitioned from a "period of growth and expansion" to a "period of maturity and stagnation", and has undergone a process of suburbanization, disurbanization, and reurbanization. In recent years, small-scale shopping centers have emerged along railroad lines in suburban areas. From the analysis of traffic behavior, it was revealed that there was a diversification of activities within the living area near the home. Based on these findings, it is thought that the development of living areas through reurbanization will be important for the next generation of the Tokyo metropolitan area.
