Abstract

An investigation is reported on perception of tourists towards pedestrian infrastructure and facilities at tourist destinations in India. Perception of tourists towards 31 relevant attributes were captured in terms of importance using a Likert-type scale. 2900 responses collected from tourist from three popular tourist destinations in India were analyzed using RIDIT to rank attributes as per their importance. Walkway with good surface condition, barrier-free facility, enhanced security and safety are found to be the high-ranked attributes. Investigation on heterogeneity with respect to socioeconomic characteristics of tourists using box-plot and pairwise comparison tests showed interesting variations in perception on some priority attributes. The study indicates low importance on environment related attributes and justify the need for improving awareness of tourists towards the environment. The findings reported in the paper would help the policymakers to improve pedestrian infrastructure at tourist destinations to promote walking and reduce transport externalities.
