Abstract

The paper presented an investigation result of the effect on collision prevention of a field trial of the V2X Motorcycle Safety Warning System (MSWS) which was conducted for reducing motorcycle accidents in Taiwan. The analysis was conducted by comparing the Post Encroachment Time (PET) and Time to Collision (TTC) of before and after implemented the MSWS using statistic method and Survival Theory. The results showed that, on average, the PET increased from 2.15 to 2.34 seconds for left turn crossing conflicts; the PET increased from 2.56. to 2.96 seconds for right angle turns; and TTC increased from 2.20 to 2.74 seconds for right turn merge conflicts. The accident occurrence also decreased afterwards in the field trial sites of 30%. Furthermore, according to the Kaplan-Meier survival curve, those who utilized the MSWS had a higher survival rate overall than without the MSWS system based on the value of the survivor curve using PET or TTC. Overall, the system had the positive effect and expected to help drivers to avoid accident.
