Abstract

In Japan, most fatal traffic accidents occur at intersections. Because Japan is facing an aging society with a declining birthrate, traffic safety for the elderly and children is an important issue, and traffic safety measures at intersections on residential roads are also becoming more important. Previous studies have already pointed out that visibility has a significant impact on the risk of traffic accidents. In this study, a 3D model was created using the Lidar sensor of a smartphone, which nowadays is commonly used, and an evaluation of the safety of unsignalized intersections on residential roads was attempted, by considering the visibility of the intersection. The effectiveness of the evaluation method of visibility using the 3D model was confirmed by comparing the evaluation results of intersections that residents pointed out as potentially hazardous for children and intersections that were not pointed out.
