Abstract

Intersections play crucial role in urban traffic flow, significantly influencing overall traffic performance. Improving traffic operations is therefore a key priority, often addressed through various control measures, such as traffic signals enhanced by advanced technology. This study focuses on the analysis of two major intersections in Pokhara City—Prithvi Chowk and Sabhagriha—by evaluating their performance under conventional isolated traffic signals and comparing these with a synchronized signal system. Data on intersection geometry, traffic patterns, and operational parameters were gathered through field surveys, using video recording techniques. The performance of these intersections was then assessed with software “SIDRA Intersection 8 Plus.”

The Level of Service (LOS) was calculated using a calibrated and validated SIDRA model for the base year of 2024, and projections for the year 2029 were also made. The results showed that optimizing cycle times and implementing coordinated signal systems could significantly enhance intersection performance in urban areas.
