Abstract
Factors affecting the effect of cytokinin on breaking the dormancy of gladiolus (cv. Hector) corm were examined. Soaking dormant corms in 20 ppm benzyladenine solution for 24 hr brought about 100% sprouting within 2 to 3 weeks. The most favourable temperature during or after soaking was 30°C.
Benzyladenine treatment resulted in the loss of apical dominance and inhibition of root growth. The number of sprouted buds was reduced and the development of root was promoted, when 10 ppm NAA was added to the benzyladenine solution.
Resoaking in 100 ppm gibberellin solution 3 days after the primary soaking in benzyladenine resulted in a good growth of shoot and root, while 100 ppm gibberellin alone gave no sprouting and only a slight growth of root.
