Abstract
In this study, the utilization potential of wood materials as the structural glued laminated timber was estimated for bridges managed by Wakayama Prefecture based on the medium- and long-term renewal demand, considering the soundness and lifetime of the bridges. We also evaluated the effect of the replacement of the existing concrete and steel bridges by wooden bridges on GHG emission reduction. As a result of the analysis, it was found that 1) the replacement of existing bridges with wooden bridges could create medium- to long-term demand for timber, 2) due to the replacement of bridges with a length of less than 30 meters by wooden bridges, the cumulative demand for wood in Wakayama Prefecture from 2030 to 2050 could increase by 17% from the amount of wood production in 2020, and 3) the utilization of wood materials for major parts of bridges replaced could reduce GHG emissions by approximately 26% compared to the utilization of conventional construction materials.
