The √21×√21-(Au,Ag) phase on a Si(111) surface, prepared by the Ag deposition on the Si(111)-5×2-Au surface, was studied by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The surface phase is metallic and has a two-dimensional electronic structure similar to those of the √21×√21 phases prepared by noble metal adsorption on the Si(111)-√3×√3-Ag surface. An additional surface-state was found, which may originate from the Au 6s and 6p orbitals. [DOI: 10.1380/ejssnt.2012.310]
