We synthesized novel thiophene-based LCs with different numbers of thiophene rings (TR4 and TR5). They were doped as an active dye into LC hosts to evaluate the laser-induced reorientation by means of optical Freedericksz transition (OFT). The threshold intensity of light for the OFT was significantly decreased both in a polar host (5CB) and a non-polar host (MBBA) in the presence of a small amount of TR5 as compared to that for pure LC hosts. It has been confirmed that the LC host tends to reorient parallel to the polarization of the incident light in TR5-doped 5CB upon irradiation.
