We have performed the measurements of linear and nonlinear electrooptic effect around the SmA-SmCα* phase transition point in an antiferroelectric liquid crystal MHPOBC. The first-order electrooptic response was continuous with a small slope change at the transition point in its temperature dependence, as well as the linear dielectric constant. While the second-order response increased steeply near the SmA to SmCα* phase transition point. In the temperature dependence of relaxation frequency obtained from the second-order response, we found a soft mode inducing the SmA-SmCα* phase transition.
