Layer Structure of Smectic A Phase of Compounds having a Terminal Nitro Group

Abstract

This paper describes X-ray diffraction studies for smcctic A phases of 4-nitrophcnyl 4-(4-alkoxy- benzoyloxy)benzoates, 4-alkoxylphenyl 4-(4-nitrobenzoyloxy)benzoates, 4-(4-alkoxylbenzoyl- oxy)phenyl 4-nitrobenzoates, and 4-alkoxylphcnyl 4-nitrophcnyl tercphthalates. The layer spacings (d) are discussed in terms of thc molecular length (l) calculated by semi-empirical molecular orbital method and molecular arrangement.
