Heat Capacity of the Metallomesogen, Cobalt Stearate

Abstract

Heat capacities of a cobalt soap Co(O_2CC_<17>H_<35>)_2 in purple color form were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter in the 16-420 K temperature range. Phase transitions were obsrved at 362.1 K (Crl-Cr2), 380.8 K (Cr2-mesophase), and 400.4 K (mesophase-I). The entropy and enthalpy gains at the (mesophase-I) phase transition was estimated to be 7.57 J K^<-1> mol^<-1> and 3.05 kJ mol^<-1>, respectively. The type of mesophase is undetermined at the present.
