We have developed thermotropic smectic or discotic liquid-crystalline folic acid derivatives having lipophilic long alkyl chains. The addition of sodium trifrate to the folic acids leads to a change of the self-assembled structures from the smectic to columnar phases. In this study, we have examined the self-assembled structure of the folic acid derivatives with sodium trillate by using UV and CD spectroscopy. A chloroform solution of folic acid derivatives alone do not exhibit the Cotton effect. The addition of the sodium salt to the solution induce the positive Cotton effect. Four-stranded helices of the folic acid derivatives may be formed by the ion-dipolar interactions between pterin rings and the sodium ion.
