2B02 Control of Liquid Crystal Alignment by Polymerized Fibrous Aggregates of Hydrogen-Bonded Molecules in Oriented States

Abstract

We have succeeded in anisotropic aggregation of a hydrogen-bonded gelator with polymerizable groups in oriented smectic liquid crystals. The oriented fibrous aggregates of the gelator can be photopolymerized in the liquid crystals. We have found that the liquid crystals align along the polymerized fibrous aggregates. The orientation behavior of liquid crystals and gelators has been examined by polarizing optical microscopy and polarized infrared measurements.
