The photorefractive effect of fourteen ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) doped with a photoconductive compound (CDH) and a electron trap reagent was investigated. It was found that the photorefractivity was greatly affected by the miscibility of photoconductive compounds with FLCs. Photorefractive effect was only observed at the temperature at which the samples exhibited the ferroelectricity. The gain coefficient increased as increasing the concentration of the photoconductive compound up to 2.0w%. The response time was measured to be 〜45ms, which was faster than those reported in nematic liquid crystals.
