We improved flexibility of a polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) device by applying thinner substrates and optimizing the conditions for forming polymer walls. When the bending tolerance of the device (size : 1×6cm) fabricated using 100μm-thick plastic film substrates was measured, it could be bent in a radius of 0.7cm with keeping uniform FLC alignment. The deformation of FLC smectic layers was estimated to be extremely small from calculation for length change of the two substrates in a bent device. We also demonstrated that a larger device (size : 10×10cm) bent in radius under 2cm exhibited good display operation.
